Welcome to the world of Home Page and Bookmark creation and maintenance! Efficient organization of your Home Page and Bookmark files will help speed your way through the World Wide Web. If you have never set up a Home Page before, the first link below will help you do it. The second link will help you set up a Bookmark file which you can use as a "top level menu" in Lynx, just by pressing your "v" key. The third link helps you add your favourite links from your Bookmarks to your Home Page.

How to copy and setup Charles's Template for YOUR Home Page

Every member of the Hamilton Wentworth Community Net has a "Home Page" which is stored in the file Profile.html (the capital "P" on "Profile" is required). Furthermore, each individual has a "bookmark" file called lynx_bookmarks.html. Both of these files SHOULD be in the Lynx directory public_html/, but sometimes they aren't. If a file is NOT stored in your public_html/ directory, no one other than you will be able to read it. So the files you create now will be stored in your public_html/.

If, as sometimes happens with new Community Net Accounts, you don't HAVE a public_html/ directory, then you will need to create one. To see if you have a public_html/ directory, press "g" and type in "files" to go to your files screen. If the entry public_html is not there, you will need to CREATE it, by pressing "C" (Create), "D" (Directory), and typing in "public_html" and pressing enter. Once you have checked for (and created, if necessary) your public_html/ press LEFT-ARROW to return to these instructions.

The following set of instructions and links will take you step-by-step through the process of copying and modifying Charles' Template files for your own use, including copying any "old" information you want to keep. Some instructions include a LINK, or a "GO" command to get you to the place where you can copy/rename/modify a file. Just be sure to READ the instructions for what to do there, BEFORE going into it.

The result will be a Profile/Home Page that everybody can see whenever they select the link to your name in the "GO WHO"/"GO PEOPLE" lists.

Step 1: If you have already setup any information in your Profile.html that you would like to keep, you must "modify" the name of your current Profile.html to "old_Profile.html". If you don't have anything that is worth keeping in your Profile.html, you can skip this step. If you are worried that you don't KNOW what is in your Profile, stop worrying. If you didn't put anything in your Profile, then there is nothing in there other than the default name and E-Mail address which we are going to overwrite. To rename your Profile.html:

  1. Press "g" then type in "files" and press Enter. This will take you into YOUR Files Directory screen. You should see a small list of file names including the directory public_html/. If public_html/ is not there, you must create it (see above).
  2. Highlight public_html/ and press enter. This will display your public_html/ directory, which SHOULD contain your Profile.html. If Profile.html is not there, press LEFT-ARROW to re-display your "root" directory and look for Profile.html there.
  3. Highlight Profile.html and press "m" (modify). An option line to choose modifying "name", "location" or "permission" will appear at the bottom of the display.
  4. Press "n" to modify the name. A prompt for entering a new name will appear.
  5. Enter the name old_Profile.html and press Enter.
  6. Press LEFT-ARROW twice to return to these instructions.
Step 2: To copy the Template file into YOUR directory you must use Lynx's "download" feature.
  1. After reading these instructions, press "d" (download) with this link to Charles' Home Page Template highlighted. A menu of options will appear.
  2. Press Enter with the Save to disk option highlighted. A prompt to "enter file name" will appear.
  3. BACKSPACE to delete the "suggested" filename of "Template.html".
  4. Type in public_html/Profile.html, and press Enter (IMPORTANT: Be sure to use a capital "P" on "Profile").
  5. You MAY see a message asking if it is okay to OVERWRITE an existing file with this name. If you have not used your Profile, don't worry about it - everyone gets a "default" Profile.html which contains just their name and E-Mail address when they join HWCN. Just press "Y" to overwrite it, if needed.
  6. From the download screen, press LEFT-ARROW to return to these instructions.

Step 3:Edit your copy of the Template file to insert your name and E-Mail address, plus other personal information.

  1. After reading these instructions, follow this link to Edit your new Profile.
  2. The profile is written in a language called HTML. The instructions for modifying the profile are included IN the source code as COMMENTS. Simply move forward through the file, following the imbedded instructions, making changes/insertions where required. Suggestion: If you leave the comment "instructions" in the html source created from Charles' Template, you will have ready reference material for making changes later, and anyone who copies your Home Page will have instructions on how/where to change your user-id/name to theirs.
  3. IMPORTANT: If you saved information from your original Profile.html into old_Profile.html (in Step 1), then you will want to APPEND it to the bottom of your new Profile.
  4. When you are done making all your changes to your Profile.html, press CTRL-X to save the file (answering the save prompts properly), and you will return to these instructions.
That's it. you now have a starting "formatted" Home Page, which you can slowly work on and "shape" into a distinctive representation of you and your interests. Want to look at it? The quickest way to see your new Profile is to press the "j" key (for the Jump command), and enter the URL:

http://www.hwcn.org/~zz999/Profile.html

(with "zz999" being YOUR user-id, of course). Important: If you see your "old" Profile.html (even the default with just the e-mail address) it may be because it is stored in your Lynx BUFFER. To be sure that you have the NEW Profile.html loaded, press CTRL-R to Reload the page into your buffer. You will definitely need to use CTRL-R to reload your Profile if you make some more changes and try to look at your Profile again. If you see any mistakes in your new Profile, NOW is the time to Edit your Home Page and fix them up. Once you have setup your Bookmark file from Charles' Template, you will be able to access your Home Page by just pressing "v" and then executing a link to your Home Page which will be at the beginning of that file. If you don't care to use Charles' Template for your bookmark file, it is still a good idea to enter a link to your Home page at the top of your lynx_bookmarks.html file, so you can use this feature.

I would like to ask that you keep the two "advertisement" lines for this Template on your home page, preferably on the first screen-page (until it fills up), so that others will know how easily they can be setting up their own Profile.

How to copy and setup Charles's Template for YOUR Bookmark file

Every member of the Hamilton Wentworth Community Net has "Bookmarks" which are stored in the file \public_html\lynx_bookmarks.html. These bookmarks are hypertext links to the World Wide Web created by pressing "a" (add bookmark) while viewing a web page. For this basic level of functionality, you do not need to copy Charles' Template. However, if you would like to have a "top level menu" displayed when you press the "v" (view bookmarks) key in Lynx, and have the file formatted so that this is not immediately noticeable by other users, then copying and setting up Charles' Templates will help you do this. Note: Your Home Page must be setup correctly (already done if you used Charles' Home Page Template - otherwise see the editing instructions). In order for anyone to be able read ANY part of your bookmark file it has to be stored in your \public_html\ directory, otherwise no one other than yourself will be able to read it. So the files you create now will be stored in your \public_html\. IMPORTANT: If your original bookmark file is NOT in \public_html\ then you must be certain to perform Step 4, changing where Lynx puts bookmarks!

Step 1: If you have already added any links to your bookmarks (with the "a" command in Lynx) that you would like to keep, you must "modify" the name of your current lynx_bookmarks.html to "old_bookmarks.html". If you don't have anything that is worth keeping in your lynx_bookmarks.html, you can skip this step. If you are worried that you don't KNOW what is in your bookmarks, stop worrying. If you didn't put anything in your bookmarks (with the "a" command in Lynx), then there is nothing in there, and it is safe to overwrite it. To rename your lynx_bookmarks.html:

  1. Press "g" then type in "files" and press Enter. This will take you into YOUR Files Directory screen.
  2. Highlight public_html/ and press enter. This will display your \public_html\ directory.
  3. Highlight lynx_bookmarks.html and press "m". An option line to choose modifying "name", "location" or "permission" will appear at the bottom of the display.
  4. Press "n" to modify the name. A prompt for entering a new name will appear.
  5. Enter the name \public_html\old_bookmarks.html and press Enter.
  6. Press LEFT-ARROW twice to return to these instructions.
  7. Note: If you don't find lynx_bookmarks.html in your \public_html\ directory, press LEFT-ARROW once and see if it is in your "root" directory. If so, follow the renaming procedure outlined above, and be sure to do Step 4 changing your Lynx setup.
Step 2: To copy the Template file into YOUR directory you must use Lynx's "download" feature.
  1. Press "d" with this link to Charles' Bookmark File Template highlighted. A menu of options will appear.
  2. Press Enter with the Save to disk option highlighted. A prompt to "enter file name" will appear.
  3. BACKSPACE to delete the "suggested" filename of "Template_book.html".
  4. Type in public_html/lynx_bookmarks.html, and press Enter.
  5. You MAY see a message asking if it is okay to OVERWRITE an existing file with this name. If you have not used your bookmarks, don't worry about it - everyone gets an "empty" Bookmark file when they join HWCN. Just press "Y" to overwrite it, if needed.
  6. From the download screen, press LEFT-ARROW twice to return to these instructions.

Step 3:Edit your copy of the Template file to insert your name and E-Mail address, plus othr personal information.

  1. Follow this link to Edit your new Bookmarks.
  2. The bookmark file is written in a language called HTML. The instructions for modifying the file are included IN the source code as COMMENTS.
  3. IMPORTANT: If you saved information from your original lynx_bookmarks.html into old_bookmarks.html (in Step 1), then you will want to APPEND it to the bottom of your new Bookmark file.
  4. When you are done making all your changes to your lynx_bookmarks.html, press CTRL-X to save the file (answering the save prompts properly), and you will return to these instructions.

Step 4:For Lynx to properly add bookmarks to your lynx_bookmarks.html file it must be configured properly or Lynx will not recognize the changes you have just made and will quite possibly place your neww bookmarks in the wrong directory.

  1. Press "s" to enter Lynx's Setup/configuration screen.
  2. Locate the item that says "Bookmark file:".
  3. It should say "public_html/lynx_bookmarks.html".
  4. If it doesn't, press "B" and change the name so it does......
That's it. you now have a starting "formatted" Bookmark file, to which you can add links by pressing the "a" key in Lynx. Want to look at it? Press your "v" key now, and it will be displayed. Important: If you see an "old" version of your bookmarks, it is because Lynx has kept a copy in its BUFFER. Press CTRL-R to Reload your bookmarks page. If you see any mistakes, NOW is the time to Edit your Bookmarks and fix them up. Note that you can also edit your Bookmarks at any time by pressing "v" to view them then pressing "e" while they are displayed.

I would like to ask that you keep the two "advertisement" lines for this Template in your bookmarks, so that others will know how easily they can be setting up their own Profile and bookmarks. Thanks.
